Choosing a SIP trunk for 3CX: what the new provider labels mean

From Update 10, 3CX sorts SIP trunk providers into three groups. The label tells you who tested the trunk, and more importantly, who supports it when something goes wrong.

Three categories, three levels of testing

3CX has announced a new way of listing SIP trunk providers, arriving with V20 Update 10. Every provider and template now sits in one of three groups:

  • 3CX Tested: tested directly by 3CX, with a 3CX configuration guide.
  • VoIP Provider Tested: the provider ran 3CX's interoperability tests itself and submitted the results for review. The provider is responsible for ongoing support, including configuration and technical issues.
  • Community: templates submitted by 3CX partners, users or the 3CX community. They're available inside 3CX, but not listed in the main provider directories.

3CX is also adding a VoIP Provider Checker to the admin console. It runs inbound and outbound test calls and reports on the trunk, inbound calls, outbound calls and the overall result, so you can spot configuration problems before customers do.

Why it matters

More choice is good, especially for regional providers. But the label is really about support: who answers when you need help, and whether they know your phone system as well as the trunk.

The strongest set-up is one where the same team supplies and supports the phone system, the SIP trunk and the numbers, and can see every call from end to end.

Five questions to ask any SIP trunk provider

  1. Who supports the trunk on 3CX? The provider, 3CX, or the community forum?
  2. Where do my numbers live? Can you port the numbers I already have, and how long does it take?
  3. How do emergency calls work? Is the right address held for 999 and 112 calls from each site?
  4. What happens if something fails? Can calls divert automatically to mobiles or another site?
  5. How many calls can I make at once? Can I add channels quickly when we're busy?
