What's changing
Every 3CX licence is sized by simultaneous calls (SC): the number of calls your system can handle at once. Under 3CX's Fair Use Policy, each licence size also sets a maximum number of users and extensions.
Until now, that maximum hasn't been enforced. In July, 3CX announced that it plans to enforce maximum extension limits in Q4 2026, with full details to follow closer to the time.
Who it affects
Most often, businesses whose phone system has grown since it was installed. A licence is usually chosen for the number of calls you expect. Staff, departments and sites get added later, and the extension count creeps past what the licence allows without anyone noticing.
It's most common where lots of people make occasional calls. Picture a large team that shares a few lines, rather than a call centre where everyone is on the phone at once.
How to check where you stand
- Count your users and extensions. The Users page in the 3CX admin console lists everyone on your system.
- Find your licence size. It's the number of simultaneous calls on your licence, shown with your licence details in the admin console.
- Compare the two. 3CX's pricing page shows the maximum number of users and extensions for each licence size, and a recommended range for good call quality.
The discounts end on 30 September
If you do need a bigger licence, the timing matters. 3CX has extended its upgrade and renewal offers for licences of 16 SC and above until 30 September 2026:
- 25%
- off SC upgrades
- 30%
- off SC upgrades with a renewal of three years or more
The discounts cover both the upgrade and the renewal, on licence keys bought at least 12 months ago. 3CX has also added two larger licence sizes for bigger organisations: 384 SC, for up to 3,072 extensions, and 768 SC, for up to 6,144.
